House Checks
If you are leaving town for any period of time, and concerned about your home being vacant, or if you're going away and are leaving young adults or children at home, you can put your residence on our Department's House Check List. Simply drop off one of these forms or come to the police station to complete this form prior to your departure. The Police Department will make regular periodic checks of your residence in your absence as staffing levels and duty assignments permit.
Please Note: During winter months your driveway and walkways must be cleared of snow if you request a check of your residence. Failure to keep these areas maintained may result in the inability to properly check your home.
Tips:
1. Stop all deliveries or have a trusted friend, neighbor or relative pick them up.
2. Do not close all drapes and blinds.
3. Do not discuss your absence casually or post your vacation plans on social media sites.
4. Have your lawn mowed or driveways/walkways cleared of snow.
5. Move valuables away from view of windows.
6. Keep a list of valuables (make, model, color serial number and a picture of the item).
7. Put outdoor property away (bicycles, lawn furniture, etc.)
8. Leave a key with a trusted friend, neighbor or relative to check your home.
9. The key holder should be able to contact you in case of an emergency and should be able to respond to your home if the police request them to.
