Volunteer Board & Committee Opportunities

Volunteer Opportunities:

The Town of Grantham has 10 municipal committees/boards and all of these are run by volunteers from our local community. Given inevitable turnover, we are often in need of extra members or alternates. Please consider joining one or more as a way to get to know members of the community and be involved in the town's goings on. This is a great way to be part of the behind-the-scenes action of small-town government. Please note all volunteers must be full-time residents and voters in Grantham. Appointments/tenure typically lasts 3 years. The time commitment varies but averages about 1-5 hours per month, so it's fairly minimal. Some positions are elected whereas others are appointed.

The following are listed in order of greatest need. All meetings are held in the Jerry Whitney Memorial Conference Room in Town Hall:

Trustees of the Trust Fund (TTF): This is for those numbers people who like to run a spreadsheet. The trustees oversee the funds that pour in and out of various entities to fund small and large items alike. If you love balancing a checkbook, this is the one for you. The TTF meets every third Thursday at 4:30 p.m. This is an elected position. [Current needs: 1-2 alternates].

Cemetery Trustees: Did you know that our small community has seven cemeteries? The cemetery trustees oversee all things cemetery including receiving of funds for plot purchases, maintaining the grounds of the cemeteries, liaising with the town sexton, and authoring adjustments to the rules and regulations, among other tasks. This one is for you Six Feet Under fans out there. The Cemetery Trustees meet every third Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. [Current needs: 1-2 alternates]

Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBA): This is a quasi-judicial body so good judgment, an ability to be impartial and examine the facts, and an innate rule-following demeanor are key. This board examines applications seeking special exceptions and variances to the regulations and adjudicates in accordance with local ordinances and legislation. So if you have ever wanted to harness your inner Law and Order self, this could be a good fit. The ZBA meets the fourth Thursday of the month at 6:00 p.m., if applications are received. Planning Board: Do you like looking at blueprints? Are you business minded? Do you want to have a hand in the future growth of our town? Then the planning board may be the group for you. They oversee land use and development, review projects, and provide recommendations to ensure orderly growth and compliance with local plans and regulations The Planning Board meets every first Thursday of the month at 6:00 p.m. regardless of whether an application was received. They are currently full but you never know what the future may hold. [Current needs: 0 alternates]

Conservation Commission: The GCC is a stacked board full of conservation-minded folks who love to talk all things green—from fiddleheads to ferns, tree trimming to Tartarian Honeysuckle. If you know your way around a garden, can spot an invasive species based on its flower pattern, and like to maintain and preserve Grantham’s natural landscape, you will find your home among likeminded people in this group. They are very active, providing events, hosting ongoing educational talks, and putting out educational materials that help preserve and protect the natural resources and environment of our local area. While this committee is not currently seeking members, they welcome your presence at their meetings, held the first Monday of the month at 6:00 p.m.

Capital Improvement Project Committee (CIPC): If you’ve ever been interested in knowing how and where your tax dollars go to fund capital improvement projects (i.e. items that are valued at more than $10,000 and last for more than five years), this is a good group to join because you have a direct hand in deciding what does and doesn’t matter to our town. If you have good judgment, know a thing or two about equipment and maintenance, and like to be judicious about spending, this would be a good fit. This group meets the first Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. and their process begins in April of every year, running through October, so be on the lookout for a callout for fresh volunteers in late fall. Master Plan Committee: The MPC meets every decade under the advisement of the Planning Board. Together, this group acts as an advisory body that guides long-term planning, development, and strategic growth for our town. The 2026 Master Plan is just wrapping up, so this committee does not need any members until 2035 but be on the lookout for ways to lend input into this process to help make Grantham even better.
